- 1984 Olympic Torch Run, Created by Burson-Marsteller for their client, AT&T:
In January of 1984, a high level executive at the Burson-Marsteller advertising firm called me with a serious problem. The dilemma surrounded events to start off the Olympics, which were taking place in Los Angeles that year.
Burson-Marsteller had pitched the idea of taking the torch across the country to their client AT&T before the Olympics Committee began enlisting professional runners and local residents of each city to do so.
In addition, a large concert was being held in LA, featuring Frank Sinatra, George Burns and the Beach Boys.
The torch run was scheduled to go through San Francisco and Frank Sinatra was performing there as well!
At the time, no one realized that the torch run and the concert were booked for the same weekend as the opening of the Democratic National Convention. There was not a room to be had, nor a limousine or town car available in the entire city.
At that time, I approached Burson-Marsteller to be hired as an independent contractor to handle all of the travel arrangements for everyone involved in the torch run, including the talent. I became responsible for hotel, limousine, dinner, and cocktail reception arrangements in each city.
They hired me and it was a total success!!
- The Yearly National Association of Television Programming Executive Convention (NATPE)
I was hired as an independent contractor for various clients including Telepictures, Lorimar, MGM/UA and Warner Bros. I was responsible for all convention attendees, talent and executives, and my staff booked their airline reservations, car transfers and hotel rooms.
I also selected the amenities to go in each suite and pre-registered the executives and their VIP attendees.
I booked and coordinated all cocktail receptions, dinners and meeting rooms as well as catering and audio visual requests.
- Retreats for VIP Chairmen and Senior Executives, Blue Chip Corporations
I have been hired by several companies to scout out suitable company resort locations. I negotiate rates with the hotel, airline and car service.
With information and guidelines given to me by the company, I handle catering, meeting room accommodations, equipment requests, amenities and all receptions, including outside activities.
- MIP Asia Reception for Asian Attendees
The MIP Asia Convention is similar to the NATPE convention, but operates on a smaller scale and caters to the Asian television programming buyers.
The first year the convention was held in Hong Kong. A well-known animation company contacted me to handle a cocktail reception for 300 Asian buyers, all potential first-time clients for the company.
The object, of course, was to sell the television shows.
Through my research, I learned what types of delicacies the delegates enjoy at cocktail parties, none of which had to do with their Asian culinary hors d'oeuvres. I planned the menu accordingly.
Most of the guests were accompanied by personal assistants and interpreters, for whom I accommodated by setting up a separate dining area.
Another successful evening!
- Chartering a yacht cruise on the Mediterranean in Bodrum, Turkey
Through a referral from a hotel executive, I was contacted by the wife of a professor of international economics to charter a fully staffed yacht to cruise down the Mediterranean from Bodrum, Turkey. I only had one week to plan the event.
I was able to accomplish this request and even provided my clients with the resumes and backgrounds of all people involved prior to the event.
My staff also created menus catering to the clients' requests.
I arranged the air travel and hotel accommodations for them before and after their cruise.
My staff and I set all additional details in place and fulfilled special requests, like installing several air conditioners on the yacht. Although Turkish yachts are not equipped with air conditioners, I was able to make it happen.
